The F major 7th chord (Fmaj7) is built from a root note (F), a major third (A), a perfect fifth (C) and a major seventh (E):

  • Type: tetrad.
  • Formule: 1 3 5 7.
  • Music notes: F (1) A (3) C (5) E (7).
  • Chords to play with: IVmaj7 (B♭maj7) y V7 (C7).

Fmaj7 chord [Musical explanation]

The F major seventh chord is a tetrad with formula 1 – 3 – 5 – 7. Therefore, to build it we need F (1), A (3), C (5) and E (7):

what notes are in F maj7 chord

This is due to the fact that a major seventh chord is made up of 3 third intervals:

  • A major interval (4 half steps between the 3rd and root).
  • A minor interval (3 half steps between the 5th and 3rd).
  • A major interval (4 half steps between the 7th and 5th).

If we apply this principle to the Fmaj7 chord we obtain that:

  • A is the major third of F because it is 4 half steps above the root.
  • C is the perfect fifth of F because it is 3 half steps above the 3rd.
  • E is the major seventh of F because it is 4 half steps above the 5th.

Thus, this confirms that F major seventh chord is defined by:

Root (F) – Major Third (A) – Perfect Fifth (C) – Major Seventh (E)

To sum up, in order to build the Fmaj7 chord we need to add the major seventh (7th) to the F major chord.
